Calling/comparing present democratic systems a/to scam is kind of harsh-problematic but I do see your point. Would you consider autocratic, plutocratic, socialistic, capitalistic, etc. system as scams too? If these are also scams, then what kind of system is not scam? Our bio/eco-logical system? Fear, hope, greed, lust, pride, anger, envy, etc. are very power emotions-values that has driven mankind to say-do (or not say-do) many great &/or heinous things. Unfortunately, these emotions-values, combined with the lack of truth/facts/skill & a flood/swamp of post-truth/fake-news/alternative-facts make forming a good/better system extremely tricky.
By society I take it as you are referring to human society. But as we all know humans are not the only organism that has social structure. Apes, lions, elephants, zebra, penguins, ants, etc. also have some social structure. In fact, even our cells-microbes also has a kind of social-ecological structure. As we understand from biology, a brain is very "hungry" organ & need lots of resources to keep it going, but even so, it cannot consume more than a certain percentage of the bodily resources as these will shut down other system & threaten the whole organism. In times of extreme stress, certain organ may have to be "suspended", e.g. the brain will blackout, when oxygen falls below a certain level but the heart can still keep going (slowly) to ensure that the whole organism still get some resources. Perhaps studying nature/evolution/history, humans can discover-create an equilibrium somewhere to ensure efficient prosperity without excessive exploitation, yes?
Indeed, my grandfather who was less education & less wealth than my generation still manage to have more kids & wealth (maybe he's smart to acquire assets instead of money as suggested by Robert Kiyosaki?). Unfortunately I can't see how technology is going to provide the/any solution (maybe possible with technological "revolution" like nano-bots/bionics??). It's looks more like the socio-political culture that's causing/magnifying these problems. The nation/government need (or greed?) to engage in regular/unnecessary war (e.g. war on real/imagined enemies, war on terrorism, war on drugs, etc.) & bailouts "eats" into the wealth (& health) of the people (like blood sucking vampires?). When the government ran out of ways to get revenue from taxes, duties, fines, etc. it starts to borrow &/or print more cash. Unfortunately these only compounded the problems & cause even more problems. (Maybe this is why astronomers can't find any advance civilisation out there? Their government eventually consume everything & become extinct before they spread to other worlds?)
Living with high taxes, expenses, mortgages, debts, etc. is probably an effect due to government past excessive spending on warfare, bailouts &/or public extravagance to bolster vanity. Many ancient texts like 孙子兵法, already warned/advised that "其用戰也，勝久則鈍兵挫銳，攻城則力屈，久暴師則國用不足。夫鈍兵，挫銳，屈力，殫貨，則諸侯乘其弊而起，雖有智者，不能善其後矣！故兵聞拙速，未睹巧之久也；夫兵久而國利者，未之有也。" This statement roughly translate as: When you engage in war/excesses, if victory is not swift-efficient, then men's weapons/tools will grow dull and their ardour will be damped. If you lay siege, you will exhaust your strength. Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources of the State will not sustain the strain. Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardour damped, your strength exhausted and your treasure spent, other chieftains will spring up to take advantage of your extremity. Then no man, however wise, will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue. Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays. There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged-regular war/excesses." (Apologies if you can't read Hanzi/Kanji & understand it's subtle advice-warning). Gross violation of this "time-tested" principle indicates a government that has no/little regard for the actual well-being/future of the people in the state. Such a nation is destined to decline-fall regardless of their technology-culture (unless they really have unlimited resources &/or divine assistance?)
